Utah's iconic Bonneville Salt Flats are known for being a perfect place for photoshoots and films. This incredibly unique landscape is found west of the Great Salt Lake near the Utah and Nevada border in Tooele County. It can be easily seen from I-80 from Salt Lake City to Wendover, NV. The Bonneville Salt Flats is administered by the Bureau of Land Management for public use and enjoyment. Camping overnight on the flats is not allowed but you can camp in the Silver Island Mountains nearby.
The closest town is Wendover, Nevada where hotels and restaurants are available. The Salt Flats are about 1.5 hours from Salt Lake City, Utah. The end of November to the end of April each year is the wet season. The Salt Flats can be covered in water and it's easy for cars to get stuck.
It is also advised to bring sunscreen with you as the ultraviolet radiation off of the white ground can be intense! And remember to leave no trace!
No permits are required for photography but film may require one.
The BLM asks that filmmakers fill out a questionnaire and email it to Peter Monson at email@example.com at least two weeks before your shoot to make sure there are no conflicts and may result in you needing to get a permit. This questionnaire has been added as the last two photos for this listing.
Exclusive access means the event is allowed to accept or deny anyone they'd like to during that time on the Salt Flats. According to the BLM, no photographers or filmmakers are allowed on the property while these events are taking place unless the event has approved it.
August 7-13, 2021: Speed Week has exclusive access to the Salt Flats. Visit SCTA-BNI.org to stay updated on the dates each year.
Tips From Other Creatives In The Tribe
If you’re doing an outdoor ceremony, remember to think about the sun! Golden hour makes for the best photos and that means sunrise or sunset!
It’s more windy and cold than expected. You can drive on the salt! However, make sure you’re driving on areas that are completely dry. Cars can get stuck in the salt and it can corrode the underneath of your car!
